The dot SE country-code top-level domain was launched in 1986 and assigned to Sweden. During the first years after its introduction, the registration process was really restrictive, so a very low number of domains were bought. Persons were permitted to secure no more than one domain under .PP.SE (“pp” stands for “private person”). Local presence was compulsory, i.e. only Swedish persons, businesses and organizations were able to register a dot SE domain. In 2003, however, the registration process was liberalized significantly and, accordingly, the number of .SE domains has been rising each year.
